Aftermarket Car Key Not Working

Why Replacement Keys Sometimes Fail

If a newly programmed car key isn’t working correctly, the issue is often key compatibility, not the vehicle itself. Aftermarket keys vary widely in quality, and some vehicles are more sensitive than others—especially newer or push-to-start systems.

Professional diagnostics can determine whether the issue is the key, the programming process, or the vehicle’s security system.

Common Aftermarket Key Problems

Aftermarket keys may appear to program successfully but still cause problems such as:

  • Vehicle starts, but remote functions don’t work

  • Remote works, but the engine won’t start

  • Intermittent operation

  • Vehicle refusing to recognize the key entirely

These issues can occur immediately or develop over time.

Why Some Aftermarket Keys Don’t Work

Not all replacement keys are built to the same standards. Problems often arise due to:

  • Incompatible transponder or smart-key chips

  • Poor build quality

  • Incorrect frequency or protocol

  • Partial system compatibility

Some vehicles will only fully support OEM keys, even if an aftermarket key programs initially.

Push-to-Start Vehicles & Aftermarket Keys

Push-to-start systems are especially sensitive to key compatibility. In many cases:

  • The key may program but fail proximity detection

  • Remote functions may be unreliable

  • The system may reject the key after a period of time

For these vehicles, OEM keys are often required to ensure full functionality.

Diagnosing Key vs Vehicle Issues

When an aftermarket key isn’t working, diagnostics are required to determine:

  • Whether the key itself is compatible

  • If the programming was successful

  • Whether the vehicle has underlying system issues

This process prevents repeated programming attempts that can cause lockouts or further complications.

Important Note on Customer-Supplied Keys

Keys purchased online or supplied by the customer cannot be guaranteed. While we can attempt programming in some cases, we are not responsible for the performance or reliability of customer-supplied aftermarket keys.

If an aftermarket key is determined to be incompatible, an OEM or verified replacement may be required.

  2. Diagnostics are performed
